Fake news on Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo senatorial bid decried

November 19, 2018

A HIGH-RANKING official of the Lakas-CMD yesterday described as “fake news” the rumors circulating about Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo planning to run for the Senate by substitution.

Lakas regional officer and Deputy Speaker Prospero Pichay said since Arroyo did not file any certificate of candidacy she is no longer joining the mid-term elections in 2019.

“Iyan ang tinatawag na fake news. Hindi po totoo iyan,” Pichay said when asked to confirm reports that Arroyo will join the senatorial race.

Those who will run via substitution has until November 29 to file their certificates of candidacy, based on the schedule announced by the Commission on Elections.

However, Pichay said he has not yet discussed this possibility with Arroyo.
“I think you should ask her not me. Because I don’t know what she plans to do. Hindi ko pa siya natatanong tungkol diyan, kasi malayo pa naman ang halalan e. Pag malapit na iyong halalan e I would ask her and then you could ask me, but it will be better for you to ask her,” he added.

To date, Pichay said the Lakas-CMD has two official candidates – former Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Doctor Willie Ong.

And following the coalition agreement between Lakas-CMD and Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago, the former has decided to support other candidates.

Pichay said those endorsed by Mayor Sara will also be supported by the Lakas.

While there is no final list yet, the Lakas will adopt as guest candidates some allies of Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

“There was actually a coalition agreement. Well, we put up candidates and there are candidates coming from Hugpong,” he added.
