Fight vs fake news vowed

Martin Andanar

MALACANANG vowed to fight fake news and disinformation and  continue to respect press freedom as journalists around the globe celebrated World Press Freedom Day yesterday.

In a statement, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said the government has been giving importance to press freedom, contrary to the claims of the President’s critics.

“Asahan niyo po na patuloy na irerespeto ng Duterte administration ang press freedom sa bansa taliwas sa mga alegasyon ng iilan (You can expect that the Duterte administration will continue to respect press freedom in the country contrary to what critics are saying),” he said.

Andanar cited in his statement Duterte’s creation within the first month of his term of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) to ensure the protection of journalists in the country.

For his agency, Andanar said the PCOO will continue its campaign against disinformation and fake news as these are seen to be a threat to free speech.

“Tayo naman po sa PCOO ay patuloy ang kampanya natin laban sa disinformation o pagpapakalat ng fake news sapagkat isa po ito sa sumisira sa malayang pamamahayag (The PCOO will continue campaigning against disinformation and the spread of fake news because it destroys freedom of expression),” Andanar said.
