THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will investigate the “ghost dialysis” controversy now troubling the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).
“The NBI will actively investigate this long-running controversy. I have instructed Director [Dante] Gierran of the NBI,” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said.
The NBI’s Anti-Fraud Division will be investigating the case, he added.
Guevarra gave the order in response to President Duterte’s directive to the NBI to look into the allegations.
Justice Undersecretary Mark Perete stressed the NBI probe was in line with the government’s anti-corruption campaign in the bureaucracy.
“The President’s directive for the NBI to investigate the ghost dialysis scam is consistent with his anti-corruption effort,” he said
“The ghost dialysis scam shows how corruption affects the most vulnerable among us by depriving them of their most basic needs,” he pointed out.
In the meantime, Perete said the Department of Justice will await “the outcome of the investigation and will prosecute, as may be warranted.”
The “ghost dialysis” modus was recently uncovered when two whistleblowers came out with the claim that WellMed Dialysis and Laboratory Center located in Novaliches has been filing claims for dialysis sessions under the name of already deceased patients.
