HYPOTHETICAL.

This is how Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo described the rumors that she is being eyed as the next Secretary of the Department of Finance (DoF).

In an ambush interview, Arroyo refused to provide more details about her impending appointment in the Cabinet after her term as Representative of the 2nd district of Pampanga ends in 2019.

“That’s so hypothetical,” Arroyo told media, when asked if she will accept the offer.

There are talks that President Rodrigo Duterte will appoint Arroyo, replacing Secretary Carlos Dominguez.

Dominguez was being rumored to be the next Executive Secretary.

Last month, some sectors sought Dominguez’s resignation for alleged failure to solve corruption in the DoF-attached Bureau of Customs and of Bureau of Internal Revenue, the country’s two biggest tax-collection agencies.

The Secretary of Finance is the head of the economic team of an administration. Arroyo is an economist and economics professor at the Ateneo de Manila University.

The Finance secretary is in charge of the country’s fiscal health, including taxation policies, borrowings, as well as debt payments.

Meanwhile, there are also rumors that Arroyo is being eyed as the next Secretary of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The former President did not file a certificate of candidacy for any position, either local or national. Some groups had been convincing Arroyo to run for the Senate or Governor of Pampanga.
