Gov’t allots P1B for bike program

THE government has allocated P1 billion for the bicycle program for Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu, a ranking official of the government reported yesterday.

Engineer Alberto Suansing, senior adviser of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), confirmed the report with other government officials during a weekly press conference via video conferencing supervised by veteran journalist Melo Acuna.

Suansing said under Bayanihan Act 2 the government allocated the funds for the bicycle project for Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao as an alternate mode of transportation.

The DOTr is the lead agency in the implementation of the project in in close coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH).

Medyo double time eto dahil funded ito ng Bayanihan Act 2, ang projection natin dapat ma accomplished sa end year ng 2020, kaya talagang rapid yung pag identified natin ng mga bike lanes at bike areas,” said Suansing.

Aside from bike lane and bike areas, the DOTr and DPWH are intensively carefully studying other plans such as security, safety, repair areas among others.

In Metro Manila, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will help the DOTr and DPWH ensure the safety and security of bikers. The DOTr’s partners for the project in Davao and Cebu are the respective LGUs.

Suansing said the government is highly considering bicycle as a good alternative mode of transportation.

Kaya talagang inaayos ng DOTr at DPWH ang program na ito para sa kapakinabangan ng lahat, tipid na healthy pa,” said Suansing.
