LAWMAKERS led by House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez on Sunday welcomed the notable increases in the approval and trust ratings of President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte and Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano in the latest Pulse Asia survey.
“We cannot deny the fact that President Duterte is very successful in returning people’s trust to the government,” said Romualdez, who chairs the powerful House Committee on Rules, following the fourth quarter Pulse Asia survey showing that President Duterte’s approval and trust ratings went up to 87% and 83 percent, respectively, both registering a nine percent increase from their September 2019 ratings.
“Our people have spoken. They are in approval of, and satisfied with, the performance of their congressmen under the leadership of Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano,” Romualdez said after Cayetano got 80 percent approval rating from 64 percent last September and 76 percent trust rating compared to his 62 percent in the third quarter Pulse Asia survey.
Cavite Rep. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga, Jr., president of the National Unity Party (NUP), said Cayetano’s upswing ratings will prove his early commendation in the latter’s first two months of the 18th Congress that he is worthy of the speakership post.
“Speaker Cayetano’s ratings saw the highest jump among all top government officials,” said Barzaga who attributed the notable spike in the approval and trust ratings of the Speaker to the success of the country’s hosting of the South East Asian Games (SEAG), as well as the excellent performance of Filipino athletes which made the Philippines the overall champion among 11 participating countries.
Barzaga, who chairs the House Committee on Natural Resources, lauded the Speaker’s competence and commitment as the head of Philippines Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC).
As he said, it takes a “hardcore devotion” to overturn the backlash and criticisms in the hosting of SEA Games.
Moreover, Barzaga said the high ratings of Cayetano reflect his hard work for the timely passage of the 2020 budget.
“Indeed, the sustained high ratings of Cayetano proved him worthy of the speakership post. The Filipino people may hope for more transformative legislations under his leadership and that of the present administration as good ratings were also recorded for President Rodrigo Duterte. Truly, Filipinos may welcome 2020 with hope for a more peaceful and progressive Philippines,” said Barzaga.
Valenzuela Rep. Eric Martinez, the chairman of the House Committee on Youth and Sports Development, said the Pulse Asia survey reflects “the hard work and dedication of Congress in delivering the much needed legislative reforms needed by the Duterte administration, under the leadership of Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, plus of course the hosting of the SEA Games 2019. The best games ever hosted by our country which Speaker Cayetano led as Phisgoc chairman.”
One Patriotic Coalition of Marginalized Nationals (1-PACMAN) party-list Rep. Mikee Romero said President Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, the continuing high economic growth rates, the continuing lowering of poverty in the country all made President Duterte popularity go up.
“I believe President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will continue to enjoy high trust ratings in the next round of the Pulse Asia Survey because of the impact of the 2020 budget, the new round of salary standardization, better-funded universal health care, and other measures Congress has just approved. His popularity will continue to soar at the 80s level,” said Romero, president of the Party-list Coalition Foundation, Inc. (PCFI).
