House leader lauds Romualdez, Velasco

Martin Romualdez and Lord Alan Velasco

– For swift House OK of unsold food to charity

A HOUSE leader on Monday lauded Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin G. Romualdez for expediting the passage on third and final reading of a proposed law mandating food establishments to donate their unsold and safe to eat products for disposal to different charitable institutions.

House Assistant Majority Leader and Quezon City Rep. Anthony Peter “Onyx” D. Crisologo, a member of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) led by Romualdez as President, also thanked his colleagues for the support extended to his House Bill (HB) 4465.

HB 4465 was substituted by HB 7956 when the House of Representatives approved the measure on third and final reading before Congress adjourned for Christmas break two weeks ago.

Crisologo noted that in a survey conducted by the Social Weather Station (SWS) poll, approximately 2.3 million Filipino families experienced hunger in the first quarter of 2019.

Although a percentage lower than the hunger incidence recorded in the last quarter of 2018, Crisologo said the number of families suffering from this issue remains significant and should be impermissible.

He said HB 7956 pushes the proper utilization of all available resources in the country by prohibiting food establishments from disposing food that are still fit for human consumption and mandating these businesses to channel their unsold products to charitable institutions that need them.
