IN a bid to stave off a looming division in the House of Representatives,  some Mindanaoan solons have created the Duterte Coalition.

The main purpose of the Duterte Coalition is to invite all lawmakers to form a united House of Representatives.

Among the members of the Duterte Coalition are Davao City Reps. Paolo Z. Duterte, Isidro Ungab and Vincent Garcia; Davao del Norte Rep. Corazon Malanyaon; Compostella Valley Manuel Zamora, Davao Occidental Rep. Lorna Bautista, Dumper Rep. Claudine Bautista;  Marino party-list Reps. Sandro Gonzales and Anton Lopez.

The Duterte Coalition is being supported by the Hugpong ng Pagbabago of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and the local party Hugpong ng Tawong Lungsod.

“As members of the House of Representatives, Hugpong ng Pagbabago and Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod hope to unite the House. We have created the Duterte Coalition and we wish to invite everyone to join this group of lawmakers who believe in positive change,” the group’s statement said.

The group is inviting speakership candidates Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez; Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco and Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.

President Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly said he will not interfere in the race for the next Speaker of the House — noting that all candidates are his allies.

The group said that it has come to their attention that certain Cabinet members have their bet for Speaker.

“Everyone should note that, Cabinet members serve only on the basis of the trust and confidence of the President and should not participate in the selection of the Speaker,” it said.

“Let us draw the line to define the independence of the Executive and the Legislative branches of the government,” the Mindanaoan solons also said.

The Duterte Coalition is a strategic partnership of dynamic public servants who are committed to institute governance and development reforms that are necessary for the Philippines to secure its rightful place in the world stage of nations, particularly in the Southeast Asian region, the new group said.
