PHILIPPINE Constitution Association (Philconsa) President Martin Romualdez yesterday congratulated Sen. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao for his dominating victory over Adrien Broner at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which could trigger a big-ticket rematch with Floyd Mayweather.

“Congratulations Sen. Manny for the first successful defense of your title (WBA World welterweight). This is another undisputable proof that Sen. Manny is a world-class athlete of his own. Let’s watch out for a possible rematch with Mayweather,” said Romualdez, a three-term Leyte congressman who is running again in the first congressional district of Leyte, after Pacquiao won over Broner via unanimous decision to retain his belt.

“We extend our unfathomable congratulations to Sen. Pacquiao,” said Romualdez, a former House Independent Bloc Leader of the previous 16th Congress, recalling that Pacquiao knocked down Lucas Matthysse in the seventh round of their championship fight for the WBA World welterweight title in July of 2018 at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2015 match of Pacquiao and Mayweather that the latter won broke numerous records in terms of earnings for boxing. Pacquiao is said to be a Hall-of-fame bound boxer with 61-7-2 records and the only champion in eight different divisions.

Leyte Rep. Yedda Marie Kittilstvedt Romualdez, wife of Romualdez, lauded Pacquiao for “bringing continued honor, glory and recognition to the Philippines.”

“Sen. Pacquiao’s victory is a testament to the faith and resiliency of the Filipino spirit,” said Yedda Romualdez, chairperson of the House Committee on Accounts.

“His victory showed the Filipinos strong determination to succeed in life despite big challenges. Aside from unifying the nation once again, the resounding triumph of Sen. Pacquiao demonstrates to the world the hard work, courage, and strength of Filipinos as trademarks in winning the battle,” said Yedda Romualdez, a vice chairperson of the House Committee on Government Enterprises and Privatization.

House Deputy Speaker and Batangas Rep. Raneo Abu credited Pacquiao for always being there to provide inspiration.

“Sen. Manny is always there to give honor and pride for our country. Thank you and congratulations!” Abu stressed. “Pacquiao succeeded in proving to the world that a Filipino can stand up to the best of the best anytime, anywhere”

Quezon City Rep. Winston “Winnie” Castelo, who chairs the House Committee on Metro Manila Development, thanked Pacquiao for his consistent efforts in giving honor to the country.

“We are proud and honored by another victory of Sen. Pacquiao. A big boost to the country,” said Castelo.

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barber, who chairs the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, said “Sen. Manny’s victory was expected and we thank him for bringing another honor to the Filipino people and country.”

Citizens Battle Against Corruption party-list Rep. Sherwin Tugna, who chairs the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms. said “si Pacman ang salamin ng buhay nating mga Pilipino. Maraming maraming salamat Pacman sa regalo mong simbolo ng pag-asa sa aming mga Pilipino.”

“Pacquiao’s victory will lift up the spirit of many Filipinos. It is definitely a big morale booster to us,” said Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone.

Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles and Samar  Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento congratulated Pacquiao and wished that Broner will accept his defeat graciously.

“Ang Pambansang Kamao, Sen. Manny Pacquiao proved today that age is just a number! Against a 29 year old, Pacman made the Philippines proud and we thank him for that. Si Sen. Manny ang ating Bayaning Atleta. Broner was smart to emulate Mayweather to avoid a knockdown. But that strategy is not enough to win. The whole world witnessed how Broner was peppered with punches from Sen. Manny as he tried to avoid them and ran all over the ring,” said Nograles.

For his part, Sarmiento said Pacquiao has once again shown     class not  only as  a boxer but as a sports icon.

“He made sure that the millions of people who watched his fight with Adrien Bronen would witness an unadulterated boxing action from start to finish. This is a true Pacman brand of boxing. Despite his age, he has shown so much speed, power and skill to defeat a much younger and much hungrier foe. Obviously, he still has so much to give in the world of boxing and we continue to look forward for these exciting fights, including a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, until he decides to retire. Congratulations Senator Pacquiao. You are a true national hero. We are very proud of you!” Sarmiento said.
