HOUSE Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danny Suarez bared yesterday that the manifesto of support for Leyte Representative-elect Martin Romualdez’s has reached the “magic number” for him to win the Speakership race.
In a press conference, Suarez said more than 153 congressmen have already signed the manifesto of support for Romualdez, a clear indication that he is the emerging favorite candidate of incoming congressmen.
“It’s enough to win (the speaker’s race). The magic number is 153 and I think he (Romualdez) has more than (that),” Suarez told reporters.
Suarez said he believes Romualdez is the most qualified candidate for Speaker given his track record in public service, apart from the fact that he is a lawyer and a banker.
Romualdez is the president of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa) and the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD). He was the House Independent Bloc leader of the previous 16th Congress.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the Ivy League school in Cornell University and a Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management from Harvard University. He also earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines.
Given his sterling track record, Suarez said Romualdez as the future Speaker will effectively push the legislative agenda of President Duterte.
Meanwhile, Suarez said some of the signatories “signified support for Cong. Romualdez with a collatilla that they will support him for as long as (President Duterte and his daughter Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio) the father and his daughter will not endorse another candidate.”
“Although that (condition) to me is not healthy (for a democratic exercise) that’s why I was elated when the President said that he was leaving it up to the members who they want to lead and be the Speaker,” Suarez added.
Suarez said even Sara has been telling congressmen not to bother asking her anymore whom to support because “it’s up to you.”
