POLICE on Thursday arrested a man for killing his 99-year-old bed-ridden grandmother by striking her with a table in her room in La Libertad, Zamboanga del Sur.
Suspect Jonito Jumalon, 49, a resident of Bgy. Mauswagon in La Libertad town, escaped on a motorcycle.
Police Regional Office 9 director Chief Supt. Emmanuel Luis Licup said Jumalon was arrested by pursuing local policemen.
An investigation conducted by members of the La Libertad Municipal Police Station showed that victim Anicita Jumalon was killed right inside her house in Bgy. Sta. Cruz around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
When questioned shortly after his arrest, the suspect claimed he got angry when his grandmother continued murmuring while lying on her bed. He said he went near the old woman and took a little table, and struck his grandmother with it.
Licup said that the suspect was believed to be under the influence of liquor when he hit his grandma.
After Jumalon realized that he had killed his grandmother, he took his four-year-old daughter with him in his escape until he was arrested in a pursuit operation.
An uncle of the suspect discovered the body of his mother when he went to visit her at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. The man identified as Recardo Jumalon quickly sought his neighbor’s help and later the police.
The arrested suspect was taken to the La Libertad Rural Health Unit for a medical examination before being brought to the local police station for proper disposition. His daughter was turned over by the local police to his relatives.
