NO delay

Alan Peter Cayetano & Martin Romualdez

House leaders committed to speedy okay of 2020 budget.

SPEAKER Alan Peter Cayetano and House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez yesterday reiterated their commitment to pass the proposed 2020 P4.1-trillion national budget without delay.

The two House leaders made the assurance as Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Acting Secretary Wendel Avisado is scheduled to submit the National Expenditure Program (NEP) for next year at 10 am today.

“Our target is to immediately pass the national budget without delays. Our target is efficiency, quality and yet faster,” said Cayetano.

Earlier, Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, who chairs the House Committee on Appropriations, said that the House of Representatives will pass the General Appropriations Bill (GAB) on third and final reading before October 5, the beginning of the 18th Congress’ first congressional break.

Romualdez said the House of Representatives under Cayetano’s leadership will work hard to pass the national budget and President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte’s tax and economic reform measures.

“The timely passage of the national budget and other priority measures will further propel the country’s economic growth. If we can sustain this, we might go to greater heights never seen before,” Romualdez pointed out.

He said “lifting Filipinos out of poverty is the top priority of President Duterte in the next three years and we need everybody’s support for this mission.”

“The numbers now are good. All poverty indicators are at all-time low. We just need to stay on the course and make sure that all the programs and policies are in place for the next phase of the war against poverty,” said Romualdez.

Ungab said his panel will conduct hearings on the national budget from Monday to Friday, starting on August 22, to ensure its timely passage.

He said the hearings will be done after the formal submission of the National Expenditure Program (NEP) to House members led by Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano by Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Acting Secretary Wendel Avisado, on Tuesday August 20, 2019.
