PCUP seeks to suspend demolitions, evictions

THE Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) has approached the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to request to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte the immediate suspension of pre-demolition conferences and administrative demolitions as the country continues to stop the spread of the coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) disease.

The Commission is aware of the left and right threats of demolition in various areas, so the PCUP is pushing for two resolutions already submitted this September to temporarily stop the Pre-Demolition Conferences especially the Administrative demolitions.

PCUP Chairman and CEO, Usec. Alvin S. Feliciano said they are focused on stopping illegal demolition and harassment of affected families.

“In this time of the pandemic, I hope that apart from the law we are enforcing, we will also apply the heart. I hope we let the pandemic pass first before we demolish again,” Feliciano added.

Under DILG MC 2020-068, the PCUP supports the suspension of all administrative demolitions and evictions.

The PCUP believes that an Executive Order will be more emphatic and would serve more as a deterrent as compared to a Department Memorandum Circular.

The resolutions were endorsed by Commissioner Melvin P. Mitra, author of Commission Resolution No.05, s.2020, Commissioner Norman B. Baloro, Commissioner Randy H. Halasan, and Commissioner Romeo H. Jandugan.
