A party-list lawmaker has vowed to ask Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) to put together a package of benefits for retired athletes and current athletes.
“Kukunsultahin ko ang PhilHealth upang makahanap kami ng paraan,” 1-PACMAN Party-list Rep. Mikee Romero, one of the authors of the recently enacted Universal Health Care Law said.
Romero noted that athletes have special needs and may be suffering from injuries sustained during their intense and long-term engagement in sports.
He said athletes have special needs because they do what most people cannot do.
“Athletes' bodies undergo more stress and strain, both physically and mentally. This is why they have special needs and more so when they retire,” Romero explained.
“We will coordinate with PhilHealth, the Philippine Sports Commission, Department of Education, and Commission on Higher Education on rolling out the registration and benefits awareness drive for athletes, especially those in the provinces,” said Romero.
