FOLLOWING new Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) head Dante A. Gierran’s call for officials of the state insurer to resign 27 senior officers handed in their resignations while 16 are retiring for a total of 43 officials.

Twenty-one of those who have resigned are from the central office and six from regional offices.Ten of those retiring are from the central office and six from regional offices.

PhilHealth has been wracked by corruption issues which has led to the resignation of Gierran’s predecessor Ricardo Morales who cited health reasons for leaving the state firm.

An inter-agency task force has indicted Morales and other PhilHealth officials over alleged Interim Reimbursement Mechanism (IRM) and other irregularities but spared Health Secretary Francisco Duque, which dismayed senators who had carried out their own inquiry into the claims of corruption in the insurance agency.

Investigations into the reported anomalies in PhilHealth continue which could lead to more people being charged, according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.

The Senate for its part wants a case filed against Duque believing the health chief, being chairman of the PhilHealth board, had involvement in irregularities linked to IRM or reimbursements to private hospitals.
