PHILIPPINE National Police chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde has ordered stepped-up police visibility and preventive patrols to ensure the security of people attending the traditional “Simbang-Gabi” which started yesterday.

The PNP chief also said he expects field commanders to personally inspect the situation in churches around Metro Manila and other areas to assess the implementation of beat and mobile patrols around churches holding the traditional nine-day dawn masses or Misa de Gallo ushering in Christmas Day.

Gen. Albayalde instructed all 17 Police Regional Directors to maximize police visibility around churches where “Simbang-Gabi” is being held.

“This is an important Filipino tradition that we cannot afford to miss. We are prepared to address any security issue that can possibly spoil this event,” the PNP chief said.

Gen. Albayalde specifically instructed field unit commanders to deploy mobile patrol units with blinkers turned on to visibly establish police presence without alarming the public.

Local police units were also reminded to be on the lookout for criminal elements engaged in common street crimes such as robbery, theft, burglary of unattended residences, mugging, swindling and gang wars.

He also instructed his men to coordinate closely with barangay authorities to muster support from village watchmen, citizen volunteers and other force multipliers who will serve as marshals.

The PNP chief said selected members of the PNP Command Group and Directorial Staff have been designated as area supervisors to conduct random   inspection of PNP unit preparations and determine their compliance with the Camp Crame directive.
