LEYTE Rep. Martin Romualdez, the incoming Majority Leader, yesterday urged his colleagues to support the next House leaders.
In his short speech during lawmakers’ meeting with Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, Romualdez said the solons who are his allies are unanimously supporting Cayetano as the next Speaker of the House.
According to Romual-dez, the congressmen respect the President Rodrigo Duterte’s endorsement of term-sharing between Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.
“And when the President spoke, we immediately and instantaneously follow, and we are here rallying behind you,” Romualdez said.
“We are the representatives of the Philippines, we represent the party-list groups, the respective parties here, and we are all here, we want to support you, your leadership,” he added.
He appealed to Cayetano to give the solons equal treatment, including those representing party-list groups.
“And all I ask is just, kindly take good care of all of us here, we are all equal in your eyes and in the eyes of the LORD and GOD,” he stressed.
Romualdez appealed to all members of the 18th Congress to work together in order to hit the ground running once the new Congress opens under the new leadership.
Earlier, Romualdez said he has accepted the Majority Leader position.
Meanwhile, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda said they expect Romualdez to also lobby for the committees they want to get.
“To be practical about it, we also ask Martin to still fight for the aspirations of those who supported him with respect to the committee membership, and chairmanships, as far as possible,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a related story, the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. led by its President 1PACMAN Rep. Mikee Romero also expressed support for the decision of the President.
Romero said they will meet Cayetano and present the list of committees they will lobby for.
“We are very happy that the President respects the co-equal branch of government. The endorsement of the President puts a lot of weight to our July 22 vote. Kasi hindi kami pwedeng sumuway or else we will have a disruptive type of government,” Romero said.
