FORMER Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Alan Purisima and ex-Special Action Force (SAF) chief Getulio Napeñas were cleared of graft and usurpation of official functions charges filed against them.
The Sandiganbayan Fourth Division said the former officials’ actions do not constitute the crime charged due to lack of probable cause.
This is in connection with their involvement in the Mamasapano massacre of 44 SAF commandos in an encounter with gunmen of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).
Last year, former President Benigno Aquino was also cleared of the charges related to the Mamasapano incident.
On January 25, 2015, the SAF men were sent in Mamasapano, Maguindanao to neutralize international terrorists Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan and his Filipino co-hort, bombmaker Basit Usman.
While the SAF men successfully killed Marwan and Usman, 44 of them died in a firefight with armed men believed to be coddling Marwan.
