Sara urges accusers to sue her in court

COTABATO City - Hugpong ng Pagbabago founder and chairman Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte challenged those accusing her of having unexplained wealth to just file a case in court.

In an interview following the campaign rally here for HNP senatorial bets, Mayor Duterte said she will rather respond in court if there is a case filed against her than make comments in media.

“Wala kasi akong obligation na mag-explain sa PCIJ about sa income naming  asawa so siguro if there is forum na dapat ako mag-explain is kung may case na file,” she said.

Based on the report of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), members of the Duterte  family, particularly Mayor Sara and brother Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, have increased Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN).

The HNP campaign manager pointed out that the law firm owned by her and husband Atty. Manases Carpio is not a corporation which why it is not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

“Kung may nakita ang PCIJ  dun sa investigative report nila na worthy of a case to be filed sa correct venue, then duon ko masasagot,” the presidential daughter said.

“But as of now hindi kasi matatapos yan kung sagutin ko ang PCIJ and then sasagot na naman ako sa iba na may question sa aking SALN or income,” she added.

Mayor Duterte told the PCIJ and the public that all their businesses are registered, legal and stated in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN).

“Alam mo naghahanap buhay naman kasi yung asawa ko, ako and of course merong mga businesses. Nandyan naman yan lahat sa SALN namin so hindi naman pwede na kung ano yung pera namin 10 years, 5 years ago ay yun pa rin yung pera namin ngayon. May hanapbuhay po kami,” she said.

In the first part of its report, the PCIJ disclosed that across the 10-year period from 2007, the prominent members of the Duterte family who are currently in public office “have all consistently grown richer over the years, even on the modest salaries they have received for various public posts, and despite the negligible retained earnings reflected in the financial statements of the companies they own or co-own.”

The Presidential daughter’s wealth, according to the PCIJ report, grew more than six times. In 2017, Mayor Duterte’s net worth registered a 28.45 percent increase and climbed to P44.83 million from the previous P34.89 million in 2016.
