Smooth sailing for Palace budget

September 06, 2019

THE proposed budget for the Office of the President (OP) breezed through the appropriations committee in the House of Representatives.

It took only six minutes for the House Committee on Appropriations to approve the proposed 2020 budget of President Rodrigo Duterte amounting to P8.2 billion.

The budget of the President for next year was increased by 21 percent from the P6.7 billion this year.

It was opposition solon Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman who moved for the quick approval of the budget.

Chairman of the appropriations committee Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab presided over the hearing.

In moving for quick approval of the OP budget, members of the committee recognized the Executive department as its co-equal branch.

Ungab also said that as a tradition, the House gives courtesy to a former legislator.

“President Duterte is a former member of the Congress, he should be given the privilege,” Ungab said.

The lawmakers agreed to take up further questions on the budget of the OP in the plenary discussion of the national budget.
