University of the Philippines official urged to quit over University Athletics Association in the Philippines social media post

December 03, 2018

THREE senators yesterday called for the resignation of an official of the University of the Philippines (UP) for posting threatening messages in social media directed at players of rival Ateneo de Manila University  University Athletics Association in the Philippines (UAAP finals.

Senators Francis Pangilinan, Nancy Binay and Koko Pimentel said  UP Regent Frederick “Spocky” Farolan has put the UP community to shame and therefore he must tender his immediate resignation.

Farolan’s social media post contained alleged threatening comments on the safety of three players of ADMU Blue Eagles that defeated the UP Maroons in the Game 1 of their championship match in the men’s UAAP basketball.

“Sayang hindi kumpleto ang playes ng Ateneo sa Wednesday.  Tatlo injured.  Pili na kayo kung sinu-sino ang mga ‘yun,” Farolan’s post said.

He later on made another remark suggesting a clash between fraternity members from UP and Ateneo or an “old school suntukan.”

“Walang gamit.  Walang bodyguards.  Good old barbaric stupid ignorant machismic hand-to-hand violence,” his comment reads.

Pangilinan, a former UP Board of Regents member in 1986 and ex-officio member being a chairman of the Senate Committee on Education in 2003, said Farolan’s action is unacceptable.

“I believe Regent Farolan should tender his resignation as member of the UP Board of Regents immediately. His views expressed on social media are totally unacceptable and a disgrace to the University of the Philippines,” Pangilinan said in a statement.

According to Senator Binay, Farolan must exercise “delicadeza” and must leave UP if he truly loves the university and the community.

“Kahit pa joke, it’s simply unacceptable for a UP official to make such offhand remarks that promote a culture of violence,” Binay stressed.

Binay said Farolan now has twice put UP in an embarrassing situation.

The first was when he chastised publicly those who criticized the university’s entrance exam, challenged them to take and pass the exam or he will shame them.

Meanwhile, Pimentel also blasted Farolan’s alleged arrogance.

“Parang nabigyan lang ng posisyon, akala nya sino na siya,” Pimentel said.
