PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has once again cracked jokes about women, but this time it was to promote the landmark measure that extended paid maternity leave to 105 days.
“The law states that after giving birth, you are entitled to have 105 days vacation. In addition, the government will also give you P100,000. So women don’t have to worry anymore. You can give birth again and again,” Duterte said in Cebuano.
The President made the remark while endorsing senatorial candidate Pia Cayetano, a proponent of the measure, at the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-LABAN) campaign rally in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
Signed into law on February 21, the Expanded Maternity Leave Act granted additional maternity leave benefits to all female workers regardless of civil status or legitimacy of the child.
“If you have the progressive laws now about women -- ang kanyang pinaka is the extended leave sa mga buntis. Pagkatapos ninyong manganak, you can have about one month? Ah 105,” Duterte said.
