Young Bautista-led Scout Rangers saved Erwin’s life

ARMY Scout Rangers who resented radio achor Erwin Tulfo’s on-air scolding of their former boss-turned-Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rolando “Bote” Bautista have another major reason why they are mad at the broadcaster.

It turned out that Bautista and his men once saved Tulfo from near death when the speedboat carrying him sunk near Jolo, Sulu many years ago.

A Facebook post showed a still young Tulfo in white T-shirt and blue jeans being surrounded by six Scout Rangers, one of them Bautista, a member of Philippine Military Academy “Sandiwa” Class of 1985 who will rise to become the 1st commander of the Presidential Security Group during the Duterte administration and later Army chief.

The post was entitled “GUESS WHO??? IT’S MR. YOU!!!”  it said: “This photo was taken decades ago when Mr. Erwin Tulfo was rescued to safety by Army Scout Rangers while he was still a newbie broadcaster and his speedboat sunk somewhere near Jolo, Sulu.”

In the aftermath of his on-air tirade against Bautista, Tulfo and his brothers were stripped of their security personnel from the Police Security and Protection Group. According to PNP chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde, the PNP through the PSPG has been providing security escorts to private individuals including media men after a thorough evaluation regarding threats to their life.
