PALAYAN CITY — A supposed anti-illegal logging raid Thursday night here turned out negative but government forces were not empty-handed as they still came out successful in their operation with the arrest of two men caught having a drinking spree and in possession of four unlicensed guns, a hand grenade, including several live ammunition.
City police head Lt. Col. Santos D. Mera Jr. identified those nabbed as Pepito G. Torres, 52, of Bgy. Doña Josefa, this city; and Fernando Albo, 56, of Bgy. Lourdes, Cabanatuan City.
The anti-illegal logging operation was conducted in Sitio Guyabano, Bgy. Maligaya at 6:15 p.m. after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office here got a complaint from Gavino Jardiel about the alleged recutting of timber and other illegal logging activities in the area, said PENRO Joselito M. Blanco.
“Wala, boga lang ang nakuha ng PNP, wala naman nakita na mga kahoy ang mga rumespondeng DENR at PNP,” said Blanco in his text message to the Journal Group yesterday.
During the raid, Mera said they caught the two suspects having a drinking spree and in plain view, they saw a cal. 45 pistol tucked in the waist of Torres.
A cal.45 pistol, a cal.38 revolver, a homemade cal.22 with silencer, a hand grenade, a pepper spray and 75 live ammunition for cal.22, a shot-gun bullet, and a bladed weapon were also found beside Torres.
Mera said the joint operation was conducted with the DENR-PENRO by elements of the RFMB led by Lt. Adriane Diamzon, the PNP-EOD/KP PECU Nueva Ecija and the Palayan police.
Charges for violations of Republic Act Nos. 10591, 9516, and 11332, and illegal possession of deadly weapon were filed against the arrested suspects before the city prosecutor’s office here.
