PANTABANGAN, Nueva Ecija – A barangay peacekeeper and his cousin were hurt when three men wearing face masks fired at their house several times before escaping shortly before Wednesday midnight here.
Provincial police chief Col. Leon Victor Rosete identified those hurt due to gunshot wounds were barangay tanod Dennis Huerta, 48, and his cousin Danny Boy Huerta, 18, both of Purok 5, Bgy. Cadaclan. Dennis was hit in the left leg while Danny Boy sustained a gunshot wound in the right and left thighs.
The suspects were three unidentified men, who before raining bullets on the victims’ house, first hurled stones causing the barking of the victims’ dog outside.
After the attack, the trio hurriedly escaped towards Alfonso CastaHeda, Nueva Vizcaya onboard a motorcycle while the two victims were rushed to the PGMRMC hospital.
Rosete said the police immediately cordoned off the area where Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered six fired bullets, three metal jackets of fired bullets and 20 fired cartridge cases for cal. 45 pistol.
During investigation, Rosete said one of the three suspects was later identified as Jerick Manalang, 27, of Purok 1, Bgy. Marikit, also of this town. The other two remain unidentified and still at-large.
Manalang was apprehended at 6 p.m. during hot pursuit operations conducted by the police shortly after the shooting incident. His arrest was carried out after Dennis’ wife, Irma, was able to positively identify him when she looked over their steel-matting wall during the stone-throwing incident earlier perpetrated by the suspects.
Charges for two counts of frustrated murder were being readied for filing against the three suspects before the provincial prosecutor’s office.
