TWO suspected members of New Peoples Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with government forces yesterday morning in Catanduanes.
This was confirmed by Lt William Hiponia, company commander of Philippine Army’s 83rd Infantry Battalion.
Identities of the slain rebels were not yet available as of press time.
Reports reaching Camp Crame said that the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. in Barangay Taopon, Panganiban, Catanduanes.
Initial investigation showed that government forces were conducting patrol operation in the area when they encountered the 7-man team rebels.
A firefight immediately occurred and lasted for 10 minutes that resulted in the killing of two rebels.
After the incident, the retreated towards an unknown direction.
Authorities are now conducting a follow-up investigation.
