POLICE Regional Office 2 director Brigadier General Jose Mario M. Espino yesterday said they have joined hands with the military to step up security patrols in Cagayan Valley against the rebels trying to disrupt Monday’s elections in the region.
Last Wednesday, Espino said two heavily-armed rebels were killed in a gunbattle with members of the Army’s 86th Infantry Battalion in Barangay San Sebastian in Jones, Isabela. A soldier was akso killed in the clash.
The official said the soldiers were patrolling the area when they encountered around 15 New People’s Army rebels. A 20-minute firefight erupted resulting in the death of the two suspects whose bodies were found in the area.
Espino said the soldiers recovered several improvised explosive devices, one M-16 automatic rifle, several live bullets, suspected NPA documents as well as medical equipment, personal belongings and grocery items at the encounter site.
