TWO suicide cases and a freak death marred the start of the New Year in Northern Mindanao this week.
One of the two suicides identified as Nilo Carbonera, a 51-year old resident of Loon, Bohol who was said to be suffering from depression hanged himself inside a house in Maria Velez Street in Zone 3, Pinkintan, Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro City at 7 p.m. last Wednesday.
Cagayan de Oro City Police Office director, Colonel Henry Dampal said the victim was on vacation when he was believed to have ended his life inside a house being rented by his son.
The man was found in a planking position with an electrical wire looped around his neck with the other end tied at the door knob. The man’s family refused a local police request to submit his body to an autopsy saying they are fully convinced he ended his life.
In Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, 65-year old Herson Paigna was found to have hanged himself inside their shanty in Purok 9 in Barangay Imelda early evening Thurday.
The man’s body was discovered by his live-in partner kneeling on the side of the wall with a shoelace tied on his neck.
In Quezon, Bukidnon, a 56-year old driver identified as Matranillo Cabaltero died after being struck in the head by a falling ‘balete’ branch while he was sitting at the edge of a swimming pool in Bgy. 9 in Poblacion Quezon at 1 p.m. Thursday.
An investigation showed that a 30-foot ‘balete’ branch broke and accidentally hit the poor victim who was then taking a rest while enjoying the pool with some companions at the Luan Luan Swimming Pool. The victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the St. Claire Hospital.
Three minors who were in the same pool suffered minor i and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
