AT least 20 people were killed while scores were seriously injured when the truck they were riding fell into a deep ravine along a highway in T’boli, South Cotabato around 10:35 a.m. yesterday, a Police Regional Office 12 report said.
PRO12 director, Brigadier General Alfred S. Corpus said that an initial investigation showed that the truck was on its way to Surallah municipality from Polomolok when its driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to crash into the ravine in Barangay Lambangan in T’boli.
“We got the information that 15 of the passengers died on the spot while several others were seriously injured. As of now, rescuers including members of the T’boli police force are still at the scene conducting search-rescue-and-retrieval operations,” Corpus said.
Corpus said the identities of the dead and the wounded who were taken to different hospitals in the area are still being verified by police investigators.
He added that investigators are still determining the real factor that triggered the crash. “We can’t say right now if it was human error or mechanical defect but we’re thoroughly investigating the case,” Corpus said.
