THREE members of the Abu Sayyaf Group yesterday were killed in an encounter with government forces in Banguingui, Sulu.
Armed Forces of the Philippines - Western Mindanao Command spokesman Col. Gerry Besana said the identities of the slain terrorists were not yet available.
Soldiers from the Marine Battalion Landing Team 3 were patrolling at Simisa Island in Banguingui when they met the group of ASG sub-leader Najir Arik at 8:02 a.m. yesterday.
A firefight ensued that lasted for five minutes and resulted in the killing of the three bandits.
No casualty was reported on the government side.
Besana said WestMinCom commander Lt. Gen Arnel Dela Vega instructed the troops to assure that the bandits will not escape Sulu.
A total naval blockade is being implemented in Sulu, making it hard for the enemy to leave the place.
