THREE children left alone in their home on Friday night were killed in a fire that destroyed at least 25 shanties and left more than 130 people homeless in Mati, Davao Oriental.
Mati Fire Marshal Sr. Insp. Christian Cena identified the fatalities as Amely Halipa, 10; Alicia Halipa, 8, and Krishna Heris, 3.
The three kids were sleeping in their house when the fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. on Friday in Bgy. Central, Purok, Sto. Niño 2.
The victims were left alone in their house by their mother who works as a massage therapist while their grandmother was staying at another house.
Witnesses said the grandmother was able to take out two other grandchildren to safety but when she went back to rescue her three other grandchildren, thick smoke prevented her from going inside.
The blaze immediately engulfed the entire house made of light materials and spread to the nearby houses.
Authorities are investigating what started the fire, which was declared under control at 3:20 a.m. yesterday.
Another fire on Friday destroyed 113 houses in Legazpi City, Albay.
The Legazpi City Bureau of Fire Protection said a minor playing with matches at the kitchen of one of the burnt houses started the blaze.
No fatality was reported.
