3 NPA, Abu members caught

THREE elusive ‘Enemies of the State,’ one of them a most wanted New People’s Army member and the two others members of the ISIS-inspired Abu Sayyaf Group were hauled to jail by agents of the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group (PNP-IG) in separate manhunt operations in the countryside, PNP-IG director, Brigadier General Edgar S. Monsalve announced yesterday.

In a report to PNP chief, Director General Oscar D. Albayalde, the PNP-IG director identified the arrested suspects as wanted Abu Sayyaf members Gappal Saripada alias ‘Badigoy/Gong’ and Amil Hamja Hamsain and Cheryl Mama Tolino alias ‘Ka Che,’ a known NPA organizer in Central Mindanao  

Monsalve said that Saripad, also known as Gappal Bannah/Maidan/Boy Negro’ was arrested in a Regional Intelligence Unit 9-led operation in Sitio Looc Sural in Bgy. Looc Labuan in Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay last Saturday.

The official said the suspect is the subject of a warrant of arrest for multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder issued by Judge Danilo Bucoy of the Isabela City RTC Branch 2 in Basilan on September 4, 2018.

Monsalve described the  suspect as a brother of Hashim Saripada alias ‘Ibnu Kashir Saripada’ and said that both are known  Abu Sayyaf bomb makers wanted for their role in the July 31, 2018 bombing in Lamitan, Basilan which killed at least 10 near a military detachment in the area. The bombing was said to have been ordered by Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama.

The official said that the suspects are also wanted for their involvement in the February 14, 2005 ‘Valentine’s Day bombing  in different cities in the country which killed at least nine innocent victims.

The suspect is now undergoing interrogation at the RIU 9 headquarters in Zamboanga City. Monsalve said that the suspect was arrested by his men with the support of policemen from the PRO9 headed by Brig. Gen. Froilan F. Quidilla and the PNP Special Action Force headed by Major Gen. Amando Clifton B. Empiso.

The second suspect identified as Hamsain was arrested in Bgy. Kasanyangan in Zamboanga City last July 4 while in possession of two MK2 fragmentation grenades. Members of the RIU9, joined by PRO9 agents captured the suspect.

On the other hand, Tolino was arrested in a PNP-IG-led operation in Sitio Blanga in Barangay Nalidlidan, Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat on the strength of a warrant of arrest for murder and nine counts of frustrated murder issued by Judge Renato Gleyo of the Isulan, Sultan Kudarat Regional Trial Court Branch 19.
