30 hurt after jeep falls into ravine in Albay

A FULLY-PACKED jeepney on Monday fell down a 15-feet-deep ravine in Bacacay, Albay injuring at least 30 of its passengers, many of them public school teachers, who were on their way to school.

Jeepney driver Roberto Bequio,55, a resident of Bgy. Cagbulacao in Bacacay municipality, told the police that the vehicle’s brakes malfunctioned as he was negotiating a downhill road in the area at 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

The victims, at least 22 of them public school teachers assigned to government-run schools in Cagraray Island in Bacacay, suffered body injuries and contusions and were taken to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Two local motorcycle riders were also injured when they tried to evade the wayward jeepney.

Albay Police Provincial Office spokesman Capt. Dexter Panganiban said Bequio was found to be driving with an expired driver’s license.

The driver will be facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple serious physical injuries and damage to property.
