December 28, 2019

A TOTAL of 306 communist rebels and sympathizers consisting of 47 regular members of the New People’s Army (NPA), 150 members of the “milisiyang bayan,” 51, members of the “sangay ng partido sa lokalidad,” and 51 mass-based supporters of the local communist movement in Masbate returned to the fold of the government, a spokesperson of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division reported on Friday.

Army Major Ricky Aguilar bared the mass surrender of NPA rebels and sympathizers in an official ceremony led by Army Lt. Col. Napoleon Fabon, commanding officer of the 2nd Infantry Battalion in Masbate City on Thursday.

Aguilar said NPA rebels started to send surrender feelers in October this year, “many of them complaining of hardships in the hinterlands and false hopes in the communist movement,” Aguilar said.

Together with over 300 rebel-returnees, the surrenderer also yielded 49 assorted firearms with ammunitions, including 2 sub-machine guns, and 3 improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
