LOPEZ, Quezon — Four persons shortly before midnight on Thursday were killed while six others were injured after the van they were riding smashed into an approaching Bicol-bound passenger bus on Maharlika Higway in Bgy. Malay, this town.

Quezon police director Col. Ramil Montilla identified the fatalities as couple Raymundo, 56, and Maryjoyclaire Acebuche, 48, and their daughter Racquel, 20; all residents of Laoang, Northern Samar and occupants of a rented Toyota Hi Ace van, and their driver Paterno Carnate Jr., 47.

Montilla said the couple’s other daughter, Roselyn, 24, along with four other  occupants of the van, survived the accident but sustained injuries.

The injured were rushed to Magsaysay Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Acting town police commander Maj. Glenn Miralles said the smashup occured at 11:55 p.m. on Thursday.

The van was speed up on its way to Bataan from Northern Samar while the passenger bus owned by P&O Bus Corporation and driven by Marlon Ricon, 37, of Muntinlupa City was on its way to Bicol region from Manila.

Miralles said upon reaching a curve, the van occupied a portion of the highway’s left lane that led to the collision.

“Lumalabas sa imbestigasyon na kinain nung van ang bahagi ng left lane ng highway kaya pagdating sa kurba ay nasalpok nito ang kaliwang parte ng parating na bus,” said Miralles.

The bus also hit two tricycles parked on the right portion of the highway.

Bus driver Ricon voluntarily surrendered to the responding policemen.
