A 4-WAY vehicle smashup on Maharlika Highway in Casiguran, Sorsogon early yesterday morning killed two motorcycle riders and injured three others.
A report from the Police Regional Office 5 showed that the driver of a tricycle identified as Ricky Detecio accidentally figured in a collision with a Mitsubishi Montero driven by Ruel Esmas on Maharlika Highway in Bgy. Trece Martirez in Casiguran town at 4:20 a.m. yesterday.
Witnesses said that the tricycle carrying passengers Emma and John Ray Detecio was bumped from behind by the SUV as they were traveling in the same direction.
As a result, the tricycle driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the opposite lane.
After seeing the wayward tricycle, the driver of a Grand Transfort bus tried to swerve to the left side of the highway but unfortunately collided with an approaching motorcycle driven by Elmer Jarque.
Both Jarque and his passenger Rammil Lareza died on the spot while the Detecios were brought to the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital for treatment.
PRO5 director Brig. Gen. Arnel Escobal said the SUV driver is under the custody of the Casiguran Municipal Police Station while the bus driver who fled after the accident is being hunted.
The bus, with plate no. WTS-695, is registered under the name of Joel John Prego of Sampaloc, Manila. Its registration papers are being checked with the Land Transportation Office and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, said Escobal.
Criminal charges for reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide and multiple serious physical injuries and damage to property will be filed against the concerned drives.
It was the second major road accident to be recorded in Bicol region since last Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon, 13 people, including a bride-to-be and two children, were killed when a government-owned truck they were riding fell off a mountain road in San Fernando, Camarines Sur.
