5 arrested over ‘spider derby’

STA. ROSA, Nueva Ecija – Police nabbed five of six men for illegal gambling over “spider derby” in this town on Sunday.

Major Steven Dela Cruz, town pólice head, said the alleged operator identified as Anacleto Gallardo, 43, of Bgy. Mabini was able to elude arrest during the anti-illegal gambling operation conducted at 3 p.m. in the said area.

Nabbed were five suspects caught while in the act of betting in the “spider derby.” 

They were identified as Gaspar Santillana, 62, widow; Reden Germino, 42, tricycle driver; Eroll Batalla, 29, construction worker, all of Bgy. Mabini; Darwin Caballero, 22; and Genmar Caballero, 21, both of Bgy. Burgos, all of this town.

During the operation, Dela Cruz and his men recovered an improvised spider fighting arena, assorted types of spiders, and bet money amounting to P1,060.

The town pólice chief warned that spider fighting, especially with money involved is still considered a form of illegal gambling.
