THREE soldiers were wounded while five members of New Peoples’ Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter yesterday morning in Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
Identities of the wounded soldiers were not yet available as of press time. The slain rebels were taken by their comrades.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo showed that the encounter occurred at around 5:30 a.m. at Sitio Puting Tubig, Barangay Minautok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
Elements of the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion were conducting patrol operation in the area when they encountered the rebels.
According to Lt. Col. Emelito Thaddeus Logan, commanding officer of 79IB, even before the election period started, the Army already monitored the presence of the NPAs in the area as reported by the residents.
In response troops were sent to conduct combat operations in the area and encountered the enemy.
The firefight lasted for about an hour after which the enemy retreated to different directions.
The fleeing rebels left one magazine with eight ammunition for Garrand Carbine rifle, three cellular phones, two power banks, one memory card, one sim card, one pair of boots, one hammock, one poncho, ten kilos of rice, and spices used for cooking.
“The continuous encounters against the terrorists NPAs in the area prove that the communities no longer wanted the enemies’ presence here,” Logan said.
