6 killed , 14 hurt in 20-vehicle crash in Laguna

A 20-VEHICLE smash-up in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna killed six persons, injured 15 others and snarled traffic in the area as police and rescue workers rushed to bring the wounded to the hospital early Saturday morning.

Laguna Police Provincial Office director Senior Supt. Eleazar Matta said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries and multiple damage to properties are being readied against Anthony Bernardo, the driver of a trailer truck (AUA-7758) who escaped after the accident.

The accident that took place on Sta Rosa-Tagaytay Road in Sitio Kawad, Bgy. Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa City killed one-year-old Quelah Ayesha Velasco; Juvelyn Delizo,21; and her 2-year-old daughter Ariane Kaye; Lorelyn Rosel Sumadsad, 22; Jerome Baluya, 17; and Baluya’s brother Jayson, 25. They were all residents of Purok 4 in Sitio Kawad.

Taken to the Sta. Rosa Medical City were Magdaleno Sumadsad, a pregnant woman named Laiza Castillo, Reynalyn de Guzman, Ronald Serrano Sr., Ronalyn Serrano, Mark Ariel Dignos, Sarah May Dignos, Jerwin Baluya and Juanito Marquez.

Released after hospital treatment were Ker Luis Garcia, 12; Fherlyn Jane Delizo,22; Rodel Esguerra,28; John Paul Bautista,19; and Aileen Vallestero, 27.

Matta said their investigation showed that Bernardo was driving an Isuzu tractor  with an attached heavy trailer  when he started the collision.

The Sta. Rosa City police said  17 of the motor vehicles involved in the accident were going to Sta. Rosa City coming from Tagaytay City when they were caught in a heavy traffic jam. Suddenly, Bernardo’s truck bumped a Ford Ranger with conduction sticker CO-W406 being driven by Katrene Joy Duculan before smashing into the other vehicles in the area.

The truck only stopped after it rammed a bakery and a boarding house in the area.

The rest of the motor vehicles were damaged after being hit by a falling electric post which was hit by the wayward truck.

Matta said Bernardo, of Block 17, Lot 8, Dasmariñas City, Cavite is now the target of a massive manhunt.
