6 soldiers killed in in clash with New Peoples’ Army

SIX soldiers were killed while six others were wounded in an encounter with suspected members of New Peoples’ Army (NPA) yesterday morning in Calbiga, Samar.

This was confirmed by Capt. Reynaldo Aragones, spokesman of Philippine Army’s  8th Infantry Division (ID).

Identities of the fatalities were not yet available as of press time while those wounded were taken to the hospital.

Aragones said the encounter occurred at around  2 a.m.  at Barangay Beri, Calbiga, Samar.

Elements of the 46th Battalion (IB) were conducting community support program in Barangay Buluan when they heard that rebels were harassing residents of Barangay Beri a few meters away.

The troops immediately went to the area but they were peppered with bullets by the enemy followed by the explosion of improvised explosive device (IED).

A firefight immediately ensued until the rebels fled towards an unknown direction.

Authorities are now conducting hot pursuit operation against the rebels.
