EIGHT persons were killed on the spot while 13 others were injured after a six-wheeler truck carrying pigs and a UV Express Van collided yesterday morning in Babatngon, Leyte.
A report received by the Public Commuters and Motorists Alliance (PCMA) said the tragedy occurred at around 6:15 a.m. along Sitio Tabang, District 3. Responding Babatngon traffic said the 8 still unidentified victims were declared dead on the spot in the collision site.
Investigators said the fatalities suffered bruises, deep cut wounds and were pinned in the van.
The other passengers were rushed to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban for treatment.
A police report said the van was travelling from Babatngon to Tacloban City while the truck was coming from the opposite when they collided.
The strong impact caused the two vehicles to overturn, resulting in the death of eight passengers and injuries to 11 others.
The truck driver and his helper were among those injured in the bloody collision, according to the police.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has ordered its regional office to conduct a parallel investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
The families of the victims have appealed to the LTFRB and to the insurance provider of the UV Express Van for assistance.
The PCMA warned drivers and operators to be extra vigilant anew and always think of “safety first.”
