THE Armed Forces and the Philippine National Police officially declared Romblon as “insurgency-free” during formal ceremonies attended by top police, military and local government officials in the province.
The province became the second province to be declared “insurgency-free” since the start of the Duterte administration, the first being Cavite.
This means the presence of New People’s Army guerrillas in the province is now zero although security forces are closely watching the situation in the province.
Police Regional Office 4-B director Chief Superintendent Tomas C. Apolinario Jr. and AFP Southern Luzon Command chief Major General Gilbert Gapay attended the ceremony which was also graced by top local politicians and other stakeholders.
Romblon is an archipelagic province whose main islands include Tablas, the largest which covers nine towns; Sibuyan with three towns, as well as the smaller island municipalities of Corcuera, Banton, Concepcion, San Jose, and provincial capital Romblon.
Known as the “Marble Capital of the Philippines,” Romblon relies on agriculture particularly rice and copra farming as well as fishing as its livelihood.
