A 50-YEAR-old man who was reported to have been a jail escapee since 2005 was killed in a shootout with policemen in Sogod, Cebu early morning yesterday, Police Regional Office 7 director, Brigadier General Debold M. Sinas said.
Suspect Eleazar Dura was found to have used the name Fredo Cañete to conceal his true identity from his neighbors in Sitio Dumapo in Barangay Nahus-an, Sogod municipality, the official said.
Sinas, citing a report from Cebu Police Provincial Office director, Colonel Rhoderick Mariano, said that around 8:30 a.m. yesterday, members of the Sogod Municipal Police Station led by Lieutenant Harley Silay responded to a call from local village chief Joan Valdespeñosa regarding the presence of the suspect who was creating trouble in the area.
While about to confront the troublemaker, Sinas said that the policemen were fired upon by the suspect prompting Corporal Joe Umbay Jr. to shoot him in the thigh in order to immobilize him.
However, although wounded, the suspect tried to lob a grenade at the lawmen which forced Staff Sergeant Isabelo Caracena Jr. to shoot him in the body. The suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Sogod municipal health office by attending physician, Dr. Ariel Roque.
Sinas said the local police discovered that the slain suspect was an escapee from the Tabuelan Municipal Police Station in 2005 where he was held for a criminal offense. “He has been telling some friends he will not surrender alive,” the official said.
Recovered from the slain suspect’s possession were one caliber .38 revolver with three live ammunition and a spent cartridge and a fragmentation grenade.
