Batangas cop dies in ambush

CAMP Gen. Miguel Malvar, Batangas -- A member of the Balayan Municipal Police Station was shot dead by an unidentified suspect after leaving the family gathering in a beach resort in Bgy. District 6, Balayan town, provincial police PIO chief Senior Insp. Kerwin Amor Umali Cabrales said Sunday night.

A report to Batangas police director Senior Supt. Edwin A. Quilates by town police commander Chief Insp. Jaime S. Pederio identified the victim as SPO1 Roderick R. Botavaria.

Based on initial investigation, the policeman was having a family gathering held at the Malabanan Resort at 7:05 p.m.

The report said the victim was supposed to go back to the police station when an unidentified suspect wearing black jacket suddenly appeared and shot him at point-blank range in the head and immediately fled on board a motorcycle.

The bloodied victim was immediately brought by relatives to Medical Center Western Batangas, located in Bgy. Lanatan but was declared dead by attending physician Dr. Celeste Navarro at 11:17 p.m.

Pederio said his policemen are conducting a follow-up operation for the arrest of the suspect.

Police are investigating the incident.
