PALAYAN CITY -- Police nabbed a Cabanatuan City-based barangay tanod for allegedly spreading fake news on his social media account about the existence of a positive COVID-19 case in this Nueva Ecija capital city.
Police head Major Renato Morales identified the arrested suspect as Vener Cortez, 42, a barangay tanod in Bgy. Cabu, Cabanatuan City.
Morales said the suspect's arrest was carried out on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., shortly after he posted the fake news on social media.
He said the suspect was accused of posting in his Facebook account that there was a positive case of COVID-19 in Palayan City, causing fear and anxiety about the deadly disease among Palayan City residents.
City Mayor Adrianne Mae "Rianne "Cuevas said the FB post that the barangay tanod made was false because Palayan City remains COVID-19 free so far.
"When I learned about his post, I had him located right away and it was so easy because he is a barangay tanod. So I had our legal and PNP coordinate with the barangay captain of Cabu for the filing of necessary charges," Cuevas said in her text message to this reporter yesterday.
Morales said the suspect is now behind bars and will be slapped with Article 154 or the Unlawful Use of Means of Publication and Unlawful Utterances in relation to Republic Act 10175 or the Anti-Cybercrime Law
