Boy, 6, drowns in Ecija river

SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ -- Six-year-old boy drowned when he went swimming and fishing with his four-year-old cousin at a local river on Sunday afternoon here.

Police identified the young fatality as Nick Libunao, of Purok Camia, Bgy. San Antonio, this city.

Police Col. Leon Victor Rosete, provincial police head, said the victim was accompanied by his cousin Mae Cabantac, 4, when they were seen by Edilyn Rebulio while swimming and catching fish at the Ilog Baliuag at 4 p.m.

Rebulio told police that when she suddenly noticed that the boy was missing, she rushed to the area and found him already submerged in the water.

Rosete said Rebulio reported the incident and barangay officials immediately went to the river and were able to retrieve the victim’s lifeless body.

Over in Oriental Mindoro, a Japanese national drowned while diving at the Puerto Galera waters in Oriental Mindoro late afternoon Sunday, police said.

Katsuyoshi Shibata was plucked out of the waters in Barangay Sabang at 3:40 p.m. and was immediately rushed to the Puerto Galera Hospital where an attending physician declared him dead upon arrival, said Police Regional Office 4-B director, Brigadier General Tomas C. Apolinario Jr.

Apolinario said that the incident is still being investigated by the Puerto Galera police.
