Brave cop slays New Peoples Army rebels

A BRAVE non-commissioned officer of the Manjuyod Municipal Station in Negros Oriental yesterday morning singlehandedly shot it out with four suspected New Peoples Army guerrillas who tried to steal his firearm, killing one of the gunmen and injuring another.

Police Regional Office 7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas said that the foiled ‘agaw-armas” incident took place at the flea market in Barangay Bantolinao in Manjuyod  municipality at 9:30 in the morning.

He said that at gunpoint, the suspects who were in their early 20s ordered Senior Police Officer 3 Humphrey Teves to surrender his gun to them peacefully.

However, the policeman did not lose his composure and managed to draw his pistol and exchange fire with the suspects.

Sinas said Teves shot one of the suspects dead and hit another in the leg.

The suspects fled on foot but one of them fell down in a nearby sugarcane field.

Sinas said that members of the Manjuyod police led by Inspector Kelvin Roy Mamaradlo are still tracking down the rest of the suspected NPA rebels as of press time.
