Thirteen people including a bride-to-be and two children were killed while 47 others were injured when the government-owned truck they were riding  after attending a pre-wedding ceremony crashed into the shoulder of a mountain road in San Fernando, Camarines Sur before rolling over Saturday afternoon.

The dump truck being driven by Mario Jacobo was carrying over 50 passengers and was going down the highway in Barangay Tagpocol around 5:20 p.m.  when it went wayward, San Fernando police Master Sgt. Victor Quinao told PRO5 director Brigadier General Arnel B. Escobal.

Quinao said the group had participated in a Filipino tradition called “pamanhikan” or  when a man and his family visit the home of a woman to formally ask for her hand in marriage.

Quinao added that the bride-to-be identified as Bea Locilo was among those killed.

“The truck lost control and rolled over, throwing off some of the passengers while others were crushed,” said Quinao, adding it was unclear why the bride-to-be was on the vehicle.

“It was a dump truck used to transport soil and sand and was owned by the local government. It appears it was borrowed for the event. The passengers put improvised benches while others were standing, ” he added,.

Among those killed on the spot were Ailene Pelaez, Sherwin Mendoza, Ramona Pelaez, Pedro Pelaez, Edcel Redogon, Erwin Mendoza and Victoria de los Reyes.
