Candidate for councilor in La Union, 4 others hurt in ambush

A CANDIDATE for councilor in Balaoan, La Union and his four companions on Friday night were wounded in an ambush in the town.

Rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment was Rogelio Concepcion, husband of Balaoan Vice Mayor Nadine Joy Concepcion and cousin of slain Balaoan Vice Mayor Al-Fred Concepcion.

Also wounded in the attack were Christian Estrada, Bernabe Ordinado Sr., Teodorico Magleo and Mark Francis Arciaga.

The victims were in two vehicles on their way home when armed men in a van opened fire at their convoy on Nagsabaran Norte Village, Balaoan municipality at 8:18 p.m. on Friday.

The suspects fled after the shooting.

The Commission on Elections declared Balaoan and Agoo towns in La Union as areas of grave concern.

Records showed that Al-Fred and his aide, Michael Ulep, were killed and eight others, including Al-Fred’s daughter reelectionist Mayor Aleli Concepcion, were wounded when armed men fired at their car while they were on their way to the municipal hall on Nov. 14, 2018.

Aleli, the PDP Laban candidate, is running against retired general Pedro Obaldo, a distant relative.

Nadine Joy assumed Al-Fred’s post by succession being the top-ranking councilor.

The Concepcion family offered a P10 million reward for the capture of the vice mayor’s killers but to date, police have yet to arrest the suspects.
