POLICE on Thursday arrested 17 persons involved in ‘backyard’ or illegal butane and LPG refilling activities in Central Visayas during an operation in Lapu-Lapu City, Police Regional Office 7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas said yesterday.
The official identified one of those arrested as Joven Sohitado, the owner of the establishment in Zone Litob, Barangay Calawisan in Lapu-Lapu City which was found to be engaged in the unauthorized refilling of butane canisters with LPG.
The others are Alan Amoin, a local fire brigade volunteer who was tagged as a distributor of the butane canisters filled with LPG and Sohitado’s workers identified as Marben Carungay, Danilo Abarao, Rey Samson, Wilma Piasidad, JR Samson, Crisanto Tingting, Teodoro Remando, Joel Piasidad, Ramil Tangcomo-an, Edvin Balvez, Daniel Diacosa and Eliezar Cuna.
Sinas said members of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office in coordination with the Department of Energy raided Sohitado’s place and made the arrests.
Recovered during the operation were 56 assorted 50-kg Petron, Gasul and Phoenix LPG tanks, seven units of cartridge-type refilling devices with multiple heads, 3,837 pieces of butane canisters -- 816 of them already filled with LPG while the rest are empty and P1,687 in different denominations, all believed to be part of their sales.
